World Trade Center Shines in Blue and White as New York Marks Passing of Jewish Icon Elie Wiesel

The spire of the World Trade Center was lit in the colors of Israeli flag on Sunday night to honor the memory of Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Elie Wiesel, who died the previous day at the age of 87.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a released statement that his state stands in solidarity with the Jewish people and Israel, which, he said, just lost one of its “preeminent leaders.”
“Elie inspired millions, not just here in New York, but across the globe,” said Cuomo. “It is fitting that the spire of One World Trade Center, which was built as a response to terrorism, be lit in honor of a man who spent his life fighting hate.”
He added, “Rest in peace Elie, Wiesel. Thank you for your stories of triumph of the human spirit in the face of evil. The world will never be the same.”
Wiesel, who passed away at his Manhattan home on Saturday, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986 and served as chairman of The Algemeiner‘s Tribute Committee. In 2013, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama.
He was 15 in 1944, when he was sent to Auschwitz, and in his world-famous book, Night, he tells the story of his family’s experience during the Holocaust. Born in Romania, he also worked as a journalist, served on the International Council of the Human Rights Foundation and founded the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity.
He is survived by his wife, son, stepdaughter and two grandchildren.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said that following Wiesel’s death, “The world lost one of our most eloquent voices for peace and NYC lost a treasured adopted son.”
