JNS.org – U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D- Fla.), the Jewish chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), resigned from her DNC post on Sunday and was booed at a breakfast held ahead of the Democratic National Convention.
Wasserman Schultz stepped down as chairwoman due to a WikiLeaks revelation of emails showing that DNC officials openly preferred presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton over her primary opponent, Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.), and conspired to damage the Sanders campaign so that Clinton would become the Democratic nominee. At least one email from the leaked correspondence showed a DNC staffer questioning Sanders’s Jewish faith by asking for someone “to ask his belief” and to see if he is an atheist, because that could sway voters against him in Kentucky and West Virginia.
“This could make several points difference with my peeps. My Southern Baptist peeps would draw a big difference between a Jew and an atheist,” wrote the DNC’s chief financial officer, Brad Marshall.
Other emails showed that Wasserman Schultz criticized Sanders for serving in the Senate as an independent rather than as a member of the Democratic Party (though he switched back to a registered Democrat to run for the party’s presidential nomination), and stating that Sanders would never be president.
“Going forward, the best way for me to accomplish those goals is to step down as party chair at the end of this convention,” Wasserman Schultz said in a statement on Sunday after announcing her resignation. On Monday, while Wasserman Schultz was booed at the pre-convention breakfast, pro-Sanders protesters also held signs with sarcastic wording such as “Thanks for the ‘Help’ Debbie! :).”
The Clinton campaign has claimed that the emails were acquired by Russian government hackers who are trying to get Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump elected.
