The Association of Air Conditioning and Heating Contractors in Israel is providing free repairs to Holocaust survivors in need, an Israeli party leader announced Wednesday on Facebook.
Lauding the initiative, Yesh Atid chairman MK Yair Lapid described receiving a visit at his party’s headquarters one day from two heads of the association, who told him how their endeavor began a few months ago – when a volunteer who works with Holocaust survivors phoned to ask for help for a woman living in a hovel in Holon. Though the woman had survived the Nazi genocide, “she won’t survive an Israeli summer without air-conditioning,” the volunteer told the man named Moshe, who answered the call.
Lapid wrote that Moshe immediately grabbed his tools and drove to the home of the Holocaust survivor, and fixed her broken air-conditioner, free of charge. He later discussed the incident with his fellow contractors, and they all agreed to begin providing this service at the request of any Holocaust survivor, at their own expense, including if costly spare parts are required.
“Contrary to what we are constantly told, this country is full of good people,” wrote Lapid. “People who care, who are willing to devote time and money to help others – and just looking at them is like entering an air-conditioned room in the middle of August.”
