Writer of Popular Kids Series to Premiere Autobiographical Solo Show ‘Not That Jewish’

The writer of a popular children’s television series will premiere an off-Broadway solo show called “Not That Jewish,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Written and performed by Monica Piper — the Emmy Award-winning showrunner of Nickelodeon’s “Rugrats” — the show is described as “the autobiographical telling of a Jew…’ish’ girl’s life.”
“Not That Jewish” explores Piper’s Bronx upbringing in a show-business family, her comedy-club debut and her “almost” night with former Yankees legend Mickey Mantle.
“Audiences can expect to leave laughed-out, a little teary-eyed and happy to be Jewish — even those who aren’t,” Piper told The Hollywood Reporter. “It is the culmination of where the years have taken me as a comic, a writer, an actor, a mother, a Jew, and a human being.”
The 80-minute show was originally commissioned by the Jewish Women’s Theatre in Santa Monica, where it premiered in November 2014 and played for 16 months.
Piper began her career studying improv in Chicago, and performing in shows in San Francisco before going solo as a stand-up comedian. She has written for “Roseanne,” “Mad About You” and “Veronica’s Closet.”
Previews begin Oct. 6 with the show opening on Oct. 23 at Manhattan’s New World Stages, a performing arts complex. It will run through January 2017.
