The Lithuanian military will equip its 88 new Boxer armored fighting vehicles with the Samson MK II, advanced Israeli-made remote weapons stations, Israel Defense reported on Monday.
According to Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, the makers of the Samson MK II, the technology is “designed for use on any modern light-armored, high-mobility fighting vehicle, new or upgraded, without modifications…the system’s configuration provides the commander with full ‘hunt-kill’ capabilities without interfering with the gunner’s current missions.”
The Israel Defense report said the Samson MK II systems to be delivered to Lithuania will include “a 30mm automatic cannon, 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun … and Rafael’s Spike (long-range anti-tank missile system) carrying two missiles and eight smoke grenade launchers on each station.”
According to the report, the Lithuanian military is set to begin receiving the vehicles in 2017.
Moshe Elazar, Rafael’s executive vice president and head of its Land Systems Division, was quoted as saying, “We are proud to be an integral part in Lithuania’s most significant land force program with our remote weapon stations and Spike missiles, and to provide the Lithuanian army with a major force-multiplier.”
The Boxer vehicle is produced by the ARTEC GmbH industrial group, a joint German-Dutch venture of the Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Rheinmetall military supplies companies.
The popularity of Israeli military technology has made it one of the Jewish state’s leading exports. For example, as The Algemeiner reported earlier this month, the Indian military plans to equip itself with an Israeli radar system that will enable Indian troops to detect terrorists hiding in dense forests.
