Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that he expected the world to uphold a “uniform standard in the war on terrorism,” making what appeared to be a veiled complaint about a double standard applied to Israeli actions taken to prevent and combat the murder of innocents at the hands of radical Islamists.
“Today the entire international community says that there is a need to wage a determined and uncompromising fight against terrorism,” Netanyahu said as he boarded a flight to New York to address the United Nations General Assembly and meet with the US president. “And indeed, they must also support the determined and uncompromising fight against terrorism, and this moral clarity is necessary to both fight against — and defeat — terrorism.”
Netanyahu’s remarks came amidst what he called “a very important diplomatic week for the state of Israel” — a reference to the $38 billion defense aid package deal he signed with the Obama administration on September 14. About this, Netanyahu said that when he meets with President Obama, “I will thank him for the great and important security assistance to the state of Israel over the coming decade.”
But the Israeli leader’s comments were also made in the context of a renewed spike in Palestinian “lone-wolf” terrorism — with daily stabbing and other attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians — spurring him, as The Algemeiner reported, to order an immediate bolstering of police presence in and around Jerusalem. In addition, Netanyahu’s trip comes in the wake of a spate of terrorist attacks in the US — at a mall in Minnesota, and in New Jersey and New York City — whose perpetrators are being revealed as having had radical Islamist leanings.
Netanyahu added that when he gives his speech at the UN, “I will present Israel’s case, Israel’s truth, Israel’s justice and also Israel’s heroism — the heroism of our soldiers, our police officers and our citizens, who are waging an uncompromising struggle against brutal terrorism.”
