JNS.org – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met separately with Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump in New York City on Sunday, a day before the first presidential debate.

The meeting with Trump was held at Trump Tower in midtown Manhattan; the meeting with Clinton took place at the W Hotel in Union Square.

Following Netanyahu’s meeting with Trump, the Prime Minister’s Office issued a short statement, saying the two discussed “issues relating to Israel’s security and its efforts to achieve stability and peace in the Middle East.”

According to a Trump campaign statement following the meeting, they discussed issues such as the Islamic State, the nuclear deal with Iran, US military aid to Israel and Israeli innovation and progress in the fields of technology, economics and cyber-defense.

“Mr. Trump recognized that Israel and its citizens have suffered far too long on the front lines of Islamic terrorism,” the Trump campaign said, Fox News reported. “He agreed with Prime Minister Netanyahu that the Israeli people want a just and lasting peace with their neighbors, but that peace will only come when the Palestinians renounce hatred and violence and accept Israel as a Jewish state.”

The Trump campaign added that, if elected, Trump would also recognize Jerusalem as the “undivided capital of the state of Israel.”
