JNS.org – A social media effort to find a bone-marrow donor match for an Israeli-Jewish father-of-three fighting a rare form of blood cancer has gone viral.
Organizations, leaders and celebrities in Israel and around the world are sharing the Facebook campaign called Hope4Adam, which urges people to register as a donor through the Gift of Life Marrow Registry with the goal of tracking down the match that could save Adam Krief.
Krief, 31, was diagnosed with primary myelofibrosis, a chronic disorder that occurs in one out of 100,000 people and causes severe anemia and bone marrow failure, in which fibrous scar tissue replaces healthy bone marrow. He is receiving chemotherapy, but only a bone marrow transplant will effectively treat his condition.
The Gift of Life Marrow Registry has 13 million people in its system but none are a match for Krief, so the family took to the internet to share Krief’s story in the hopes of tracking down an individual who could act as a donor. The family is also trying to raise $2 million to help pay for the swab kits that test for a donor match.
