A British man was arrested last week for allegedly threatening a group of Jews while wielding an ax on Rosh Hashanah, the Manchester Evening News reported.
According to the report, the incident took place in the early afternoon of Oct. 3 near a synagogue in an Orthodox area in the town of Prestwich, just north of Manchester.
Police who arrived at the scene after the man left were given his license plate number and he was tracked down and arrested later the same day on suspicion of committing a racially aggravated public-order offense and possessing an offensive weapon.
A local police officer was quoted by the Manchester Evening News as saying, “We take all reports of hate crime extremely seriously.”
A spokesperson for the Community Security Trust (CST), a British charity that monitors antisemitism, said, “This was unfortunately a very ugly incident and we are glad that the police response has been so speedy and correct.”
The suspect, 45, was released on bail until Oct. 31.
Last month, as reported by The Algemeiner, a Jewish child walking home from school in London was forced to remove his kippah by a gang of bullies.
As reported by The Algemeiner, antisemitic hate incidents in the UK jumped in the first half of 2016, with the Jewish community being targeted on an average of three times per day.
In August, the head of the CST told The Algemeiner that British Jews were “being denied justice” by their country’s main criminal prosecution agency, as it failed to crack down on antisemitic hate crimes.
