Dore Gold Resigns From Top Israeli Foreign Ministry Position

JNS.org – Veteran Israeli diplomat Dore Gold announced Thursday that he is resigning from his post as the director-general of Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).
He cited “personal reasons” for his departure.
Gold, who was born in Connecticut and made aliyah to Israel in the 1980s, has been a trusted adviser of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the past 25 years. Gold served as Netanyahu’s foreign policy adviser and as Israeli ambassador to the United Nations during Netanyahu’s first term as prime minister in the late 1990s. More recently, after informally advising Netanyahu at the beginning of his second stint as prime minister, Gold was appointed director-general of the MFA in June 2015.
He has also served in a variety of academic and research positions, including as the President of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs.
“The post of Foreign Ministry director-general has constituted a personal and professional peak in the years during which I have served on the diplomatic front,” Gold said in a statement. “I am grateful to the professional and dedicated staff of the Foreign Minister, with whom together we have led Israel’s diplomatic battles. I wish great success to my successor.”
Over the past year, Gold has led the way in a number of prominent diplomatic initiatives, especially in bolstering Israel’s relationships in Africa and, more informally, in the Arab-Muslim world.
