JNS.org – Three Arab Israelis believed to be affiliated with the Islamic State terror group were indicted Thursday for several security-related offenses, including conspiring to carry out a major terrorist attack, Israel’s Shin Bet security agency said.
Ibrahim Abdel Halim Sheikh Yusuf, Muhammad Nashef and Amir Jabarah — all residents of Taybeh, a village northeast of Jerusalem — were arrested in September in a joint operation between the police and Shin Bet.
The indictment of the suspected ISIS cell members by the Lod District Court also includes counts of affiliation with a terrorist organization and arms smuggling.
The police asked the court to remand all three suspects pending the conclusion of legal proceedings.
According to available details, the three had sworn allegiance to Islamic State and were planning what the prosecution called a “Judgment Day-style” attack against “infidels.” They were allegedly planning to target the soccer stadium in Taybeh.
They reportedly planned to smuggle weapons by digging a tunnel from the West Bank Palestinian city of Tulkarem, east of Netanya, into the borders of pre-1967 Israel, and hide the cache under Yusuf’s house.
They were also allegedly trying to expand a pre-existing tunnel that Yusuf and Jabarah had found near the security fence close to Taybeh. The cell members succeeded in expanding the tunnel by a few feet before the arrests. The suspects led interrogators to the tunnel, which the military then swept and sealed.
