JNS.org – The leader of a right-wing political party in France who is running for president in the country’s 2017 elections said in a radio interview Sunday that she would ban the public display of all religious symbols and clothing if she wins the vote.
National Front Party leader Marine Le Pen told France’s BFMTV channel that the wearing of Jewish and Christian religious articles, such as kippot and crosses, would be outlawed along with the Muslim hijab and burqa, which were banned in a 2010 law forbidding face-covering in public places.
Le Pen said this move would be justified in the name of a “national interest” to “confront the rise in power and extremely strong pressure of political Islam that uses women and the veil to advance their propositions,” Israeli daily Yediot Ahronot reported.
“I know it is a sacrifice, but I think the situation is terrible these days…I know that every French person, including Jews, can understand that if we ask for this sacrifice from them [in the framework] of the battle against the advance of Islamic extremism, they will make this effort and understand it,” Le Pen said, as reported by the Times of Israel.
Currently, a 2004 French law bans the wearing of all conspicuous religious symbols only in public schools.
