Israel’s Ben-Gurion Airport is launching a program to digitize the check-in process for international flights, the Hebrew news site nrg reported on Monday.
According to the report, the pilot program — to begin in November — will enable passengers to scan their tickets on their cell phones, and go directly to the duty free area and gate without having to wait in line for an agent.
Travelers will be able to check in at home or at one of the self-service machines at the airport, and a bar-code will make the whole process more efficient.
In addition, according to the report, the Israel Airports Authority (IAA) is planning to install “speed gates” for quick boarding.
IAA data show that this year saw record traffic at Ben-Gurion, with the average number of travelers per month at 1,500,000.
Nrg did not specify how the new digital process will affect security examinations, which are conducted prior to checking luggage. These usually involve questioning by a guard, who determines whether one’s suitcases need to be sent through a scanner.
