Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon made a secret three-day visit to Dubai this week, Israel’s Channel 2 reported on Thursday.
Danon, the report said, traveled under heavy security to the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates — with which Israel does not have official diplomatic relations — to attend an international development conference within the framework of his role as the chairman of the UN Legal Committee — a post he was elected to in June, marking the first time in history an Israeli representative was chosen to head a permanent UN committee.
“Israel is a world leader in international law and in fighting terrorism,” Danon said at the time of his election. “We are pleased to have the opportunity to share our knowledge with the countries of the world.”
In his September address to the UN General Assembly, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that in addition to Egypt and Jordan, which already have signed peace treaties with Israel, “many other states in the region recognize that Israel is not their enemy. They recognize that Israel is their ally. Our common enemies are ISIS and Iran. Our common goals are security, prosperity and peace. I believe that in the years ahead we will work together to achieve these goals.”
During that address — in a potential sign that Israel’s ties with the Sunni Arab axis in the Middle East are indeed getting stronger — the Kuwaiti UN delegation, for the first time ever — did not walk out of the hall.
