Jewish Broadway Star Belts Out Hebrew Show Tune on ‘Late Night With Seth Meyers’

Jewish Broadway star Ben Platt belted out a classic show tune in Hebrew during a late-night television interview last week, drawing applause from the studio audience.
Platt, who plays the titular role in the upcoming show “Dear Evan Hansen,” sang a Hebrew version of “Luck be a Lady” — from the musical “Guys and Dolls” — on NBC‘s “Late Night with Seth Meyers.”
The 23-year-old actor, who previously starred in the film “Pitch Perfect,” told Meyers that he learned the song when he was at a Jewish summer camp, where all productions were performed in Hebrew, and noted that campers would sometimes run into trouble translating lyrics.
Platt described his entire immediate family as “musical theater nerds,” and said they were often asked to perform at bar mitzvahs, weddings and at Jewish high holiday services. He added that he would put on mock musicals every day after school with friends, and on one occasion used a tallit, or Jewish prayer shawl, in lieu of a veil during the wedding scene of an impromptu, backyard production of “Mama Mia.”
“Dear Evan Hansen” is currently in previews on Broadway and opens on Dec. 4 to the general public.
