JNS.org – A New York-based pro-Israel think tank is touting its successful legal action in forcing the annulment of a Spanish city council’s decision to boycott the Jewish state.
The Lawfare Project, which calls itself “the legal arm of the pro-Israel community,” said that the ruling by a Barcelona court against the Sant Adrià de Besòs city council “is particularly important in its broad applicability and capacity to deter future boycott decisions in Barcelona and other capital cities, which the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) campaign in Spain has been actively pursuing.”
In its ruling, the court cited a public body’s duty to be politically neutral, the BDS movement’s unconstitutional restrictions on academic, cultural and speech freedoms, as well as the boycott’s violation of the right to equality under the law.
Lawfare Project attorney Ignacio Wenley Palacios brought legal action after city council declared the municipality of Sant Adrià de Besòs a “Free Space from Israel Apartheid,” and banned official city business with the state of Israel or Israeli companies. The think tank said Palacios will continue to “spearhead a slew of legal actions aimed at conquering the BDS movement” during the next year.
