JNS.org – Google announced it has adjusted its algorithms after users who searched questions about the Holocaust were directed to a neo-Nazi website.
Until recently, the top result in the US and the UK for the query, “Did the Holocaust happen?” was a link to an article on Stormfront, a white supremacist online forum, titled “Top 10 reasons why the Holocaust didn’t happen,” but Google said it has “made improvements” to its algorithms to provide “more high-quality, credible content on the web.”
The company assured users that it works to provide “authoritative results.”
In an interview this week with NBC News, a Google spokesman did not directly address this incident, but said, “We strive to give users a breadth of diverse content from a variety of sources, and we’re committed to the principle of a free and open web. Judging which pages on the web best answer a query is a challenging problem and we don’t always get it right.”
The Storefront controversy was first reported on by The Guardian, and received overwhelming condemnation from professionals in search optimization and Holocaust memorial organizations.
