Searches continued throughout Monday in the greater Tel Aviv area for a small monkey who escaped from the safari in Ramat Gan, the Hebrew news site Walla reported.

Zookeepers said that though the 17-year-old capuchin male — who goes by the name of Connor — is not dangerous, anyone who happens to see him should not make any sudden movements or loud noises, so as not to frighten the lost monkey.

Connor’s caretakers at the safari said they believe the escape was the result of years’ worth of friction between him and a fellow simian named Kimchi. “Recently, the tension between them increased,” safari spokeswoman Sagit Horowitz told Walla, and recounted that Connor — whom she described as “very nice and friendly” — jumped the fence two days ago and roamed around the safari without zookeepers being able to locate him.

Horowitz said the whole staff was very concerned about Connor, who does not know how to manage in an urban area with cars and throngs in the streets.

The Zoological Center Tel Aviv-Ramat Gan — familiarly known as the safari — houses the largest collection of wildlife in human care in the Middle East. The 250-acre site has both a drive-through “African safari” area and a modern outdoor zoo.
