President-elect Donald Trump can teach the state of Israel a thing or two about how to handle the media.
When the media actively harms Trump, he pushes back — and it’s one of the reasons that he won the election.
Throughout the campaign, Trump routinely lambasted the press at rallies and in debates. And he won. And then, during his first press conference, he continued his full frontal assault on the press.
Trump claims that the media is biased against him. And he’s right.
Last week, BuzzFeed published an unsubstantiated intelligence report accusing him of all manner of scandalous activities. While many news agencies knew of the report, most ignored it because it was totally unsubstantiated. Not BuzzFeed. It couldn’t wait to publish the salacious story.
CNN also reported on the story, but said that the report was largely rumor. Still, Trump refused to allow a reporter from CNN to ask a question at his press conference last week.
Trump finally said what many think — that CNN is junk, and he is now rightly blackballing the network from covering his presidency.
Similarly, Israel needs to spend more time simply refusing to engage with biased media organizations.
What would happen if Israel denied press credentials to hostile media outlets? They’d complain for a few days? So what?
No one is required to engage with the media. Today, more so then ever due to the the advent of digital media, there are many reasons President Trump (and the state of Israel) are better off engaging with friendly sources than with news organizations whose agenda is fundamentally disparate from their own.
All press is not good press.
