JNS.org — Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas said he is considering “canceling [Palestinian] recognition of Israel” if US President-elect Donald Trump goes forward with moving America’s embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
According to Palestinian Media Watch (PMW), a Jerusalem-based research organization that monitors Palestinian incitement across media platforms, the official PA daily Al-Hayat Al-Jadida reported that Abbas said he wrote to Trump, warning him of the consequences of relocating the embassy.
Abbas said such a move “will not only negate any legitimacy of the US to fill a role in settling the conflict, but will also annihilate the two-state solution,” and that Palestinians, in “consultation” with Arab states, would consider “several options for a response.”
Though the Palestine Liberation Organization — the precursor to the PA — officially recognized Israel’s existence as part of the Oslo Accords, Palestinians have not accepted Israel as a Jewish state.
According to PMW, internally, Palestinian leaders, officials and educators continue to describe their aim as the disintegration of Israel in any borders, and the establishment of a single state of “Palestine.”
In an interview that aired on official PA television last month, Fatah Central Committee member Azzam Al-Ahmad said that a Palestinian state in the West Bank is a precursor to the Palestinians seizing full control of “historic Palestine.”
“As North Vietnam took South Vietnam, a Palestinian state in West Bank will surely expand and take all of Israel,” Al-Ahmad said.
