JNS.org — Plans are underway to officially present a bill that would apply Israeli sovereignty to the large east Jerusalem settlement of Ma’ale Adumim, leaders of the Knesset’s Land of Israel lobby announced Tuesday.
At a parliament meeting, MKs Yoav Kisch and Bezalel Smotrich said the motion will be presented Sunday to the Ministerial Committee on Legislation, for immediate approval.
Kisch said that anyone who believes such a move “is an obstacle to peace is talking about a peace I don’t want.”
Smotrich said, “The vast majority of the public supports applying sovereignty over Ma’ale Adumim, regardless of any peace deal.”
“We aren’t talking about annexation, but about applying sovereignty to what is already ours. I promised [Ma’ale Adumim Mayor Benny Kasriel] that we will put everything we have into promoting this bill,” Kisch added.
The legislation will be presented days after US President-elect Donald Trump is inaugurated Friday, a move that was strategically chosen, according to Smotrich.
“I believe that it’s a gift the Israeli people deserve as President-elect Trump is sworn is and [US] policy on Judea and Samaria changes,” he said.
The outgoing Obama administration has consistently criticized Israeli construction beyond the 1967 lines, and tensions reached a high last month when the White House refused to use US veto power at the United Nations Security Council to block a resolution that named the land beyond the armistice lines to be “occupied Palestinian territory.” Trump, however, has suggested that he does not believe settlements are an obstacle to Israeli-Palestinian peace.
