JNS.org – Prime Ministers Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel and Theresa May of the UK are scheduled to meet in London next week, officials confirmed Wednesday.
The meeting, scheduled for Monday, will be the first between the two leaders, and comes ahead of Netanyahu’s trip to DC to speak with President Donald Trump on February 15.
While the UK supported the recent United Nation Security Council resolution denouncing Israel’s settlement enterprise, May has also been a vocal supporter of the Jewish state.
In late 2016, the British prime minister leveled harsh criticism at then-US Secretary of State John Kerry for his “Middle East vision” speech, which followed the UNSC vote. She scolded him for describing the Israeli government as “the most right-wing in Israeli history, with an agenda driven by its most extreme elements.”
“We do not believe that it is appropriate to attack the composition of the democratically elected government of an ally,” May’s office said at the time. “The [British] government believes that [Israeli-Palestinian] negotiations will only succeed when they are conducted between the two parties, supported by the international community.”
More recently, May slammed her political opponent, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, for his harsh condemnation of Trump’s recent executive order banning refugees, while failing to criticize the many Muslim-majority countries that ban all Israelis from entering their borders.
