Ben Gurion International Airport (TLV) has been engaged for years in a little-known weekly endeavor to collect all the wayward helium balloons – with which many travelers landing in Tel Aviv are greeted by family members and friends – and donate them to children in need. A video showing the process, uploaded to Facebook by the Hebrew daily Yedioth Ahronoth, has gone viral, the website Israel21C reported on Monday.
According to the report, the clip – which has been viewed more than one million times since it was uploaded on Jan. 19 — highlights TLV’s mission to retrieve the balloons and distribute them to pediatric wards and community centers.
TLV employee Samita is seen on the video “fishing” for the inflatable gifts by letting loose a large helium balloon wrapped in double-sided tape, which “catches” the others stuck on the ceiling. According to Yedioth, sometimes a crane is used instead.
