Tel Aviv University is among the world’s top 10 schools to have produced the most founders of billion-dollar startups, according to British accounting software company Sage, Business Insider UK reported last month.
According to the report, seven TAU graduates have gone on to establish “unicorn” companies — those that reach the coveted $1 billion valuation — an achievement that earned the Israeli institution of higher learning the number eight slot on Sage’s list.
Stanford University came in number one on the list, with 51 graduates to have reached the $1 billion threshold, and Harvard placed second, with 37 alums accomplishing the feat.
The other schools on the list are: University of California, Indian Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Pennsylvania, University of Oxford, Cornell University, University of Southern California, University of Waterloo, France’s INSEAD, Germany’s WHU, University of Michigan and Brigham Young University.
According to the report, Verve Search identified 242 startups around the world as being worth $1 billion or more as of December 2016.
This is not the first time TAU has been recognized as an alma mater of choice for startup founders, and the university’s success in the field has contributed to its unique entrepreneurship center, StarTAU. Established in 2009, the center is Israel’s biggest nonprofit organization providing individualized guidance to hundreds of budding entrepreneurs.
