An Israeli-designed security system is now being used to protect the Indian port city of Mumbai, the Defense Aviation Post reported over the weekend.
The report cited Indian Navy Vice Admiral Girish Luthra as saying that the Integrated Underwater Harbor Defense and Surveillance System (IUHDSS) — developed by Elta, a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries — will “enhance the security of valuable naval assets against asymmetric threats.”
According to the report, “Sensors have been strategically installed around the Mumbai Naval Harbour to provide comprehensive real-time situational awareness for monitoring and analyses. Besides detecting large targets, it can also detect small targets like boats, divers and swimmers at adequate ranges.”
In November 2008, ten Pakistani terrorists infiltrated into Mumbai by sea and embarked on a killing spree in which 166 people were murdered — including six Jews at the city’s Chabad center.
Just last week, it was reported that Pakistan has placed the alleged mastermind of the carnage — Lashkar-e-Taiba co-founder Hafiz Saeed — under house arrest.
As reported by The Algemeiner, Israel and India currently enjoy a burgeoning relationship, particularly in the defense field.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the 1992 establishment of full diplomatic relations between Israel and India, and there have been reports that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the Jewish state to celebrate the occasion.
In November, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin traveled to the subcontinent, just over a year after his Indian counterpart, President Pranab Mukherjee, toured Israel.
Earlier last year, it was reported that the Indian military was planning to equip itself with an Israeli radar system that would enable Indian troops to detect terrorists hiding in dense forests. According to the report, India intended to use the radar system along its disputed border with Pakistan in the Kashmir region.
