JNS.org – The Walt Disney Company severed ties with the world’s biggest YouTube star Tuesday, after he posted a series of videos joking about the Holocaust and calling for “Death to all Jews.”
Felix Kjellberg — a 27-year-old Swede who gained a worldwide audience of nearly 60 million by posting footage of himself playing and commenting on video games under the name “PewDiePie” — lost his deal with Disney’s Maker Studios, after he released nine antisemitic videos in the past six months. One featured a man dressed as Jesus saying, “Hitler did absolutely nothing wrong.”
“Although Felix has created a following by being provocative and irreverent, he clearly went too far in this case and the resulting videos are inappropriate,” a spokesperson for Maker Studios told The Wall Street Journal.
Kjellberg turned his YouTube channel into a lucrative business when his videos started gaining billions of views, and he is reported to earn more than $14 million a year from advertising, sponsorships and appearance fees. His deal with Disney, signed in 2014, had given him co-ownership of a multichannel network called Revelmode that produces videos, mobile apps and merchandise.
