Unless the UN undertakes a number of key reforms, the US should withhold its funding of the global body, a former Israeli diplomat said on Thursday.

In a Wall Street Journal op-ed, Ron Prosor — who served as the Jewish state’s UN ambassador from 2011 to 2015 – wrote, “A new US administration and new UN secretary-general provide a golden opportunity to help the UN return to its core values, challenge its inefficiency, and halt its frequent attacks on American values and allies. The message should be clear: the UN must reform or the US could cut its funding” — which amounts to 22% of the UN’s operating budget.

Prosor, the Abba Eban Chair of International Diplomacy at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya and a Hudson Institute distinguished fellow, called for three main changes at the UN — greater transparency, diligence and accountability.

“The UN can no longer remain hostile, opaque and unaccountable and expect to get a star-spangled paycheck,” Prosor said.

Referring to new American UN Ambassador Nikki Haley’s statement last week — which has gone viral — in which she called out the Security Council for its double standards when it comes to its treatment of Israel, Prosor wrote, “Churchill defined an appeaser as one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last. I hope Ambassador Haley’s words send the message — to Turtle Bay and Capitol Hill — that feeding time is over.”
