University of Missouri Students Arrested for Harassing Jewish Peer

Two University of Missouri students have been arrested on suspicion of harassing a Jewish peer, the Columbia Daily Tribune reported on Wednesday.
Noah B. Rogers and Erich J. Eastman were taken into custody by campus police Monday and face felony charges for verbal and written antisemitic remarks made “over time” to the young man, the central Missouri paper reported.
Hank Foley, the university’s interim chancellor, said in a statement, “This behavior is abhorrent and antithetical to our core value of respect. It simply will not be tolerated.” Foley also said the students “could face disciplinary action, up to and including expulsion from the university,” the Tribune reported.
Following the arrests, Mizzou Hillel and the Jewish Student Organization posted a joint statement on Instagram, writing that they “appreciate the quick response and seriousness with which [the school] addressed the situation. However, we are dismayed by this and other incidents on our campus that continue to see students targeted based on identity and a rhetoric of ‘othering.'”
“Combating anti-Semitism along with all discriminations and oppressions must be a shared responsibility,” the statement continued.
Antisemitic incidents across America, both on and off college campuses, have spiked in recent weeks, including the toppling of headstones at Jewish cemeteries in St. Louis and Philadelphia.
