A top US military officer visited Israel this week and got a first-hand look at an Arrow missile defense battery and a Hamas tunnel.
General Curtis Scaparrotti, the head of US European Command, also met with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin and IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot during his time in the Jewish state — his second trip there since he assumed his current position last year.
According to an IDF statement, Scaparrotti and Eizenkot discussed joint regional challenges in the Middle East and the American general’s visit was a manifestation of the “tight relationship between Israel and the US in the security realm.”
On Tuesday, as reported by The Algemeiner, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman met with US Secretary of Defense James Mattis at the Pentagon.
In a Facebook post after the meeting, Lieberman said, “Strategic cooperation between Israel and the US is vital and critical to not only Israel’s security, but also the security and stability of the entire Middle East.”
Later on Tuesday, Lieberman was hosted at the White House by Vice President Mike Pence. On Wednesday, the Israeli defense minister met with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. Afterward, Lieberman said he had requested of Tillerson that the US examine the possibility of withdrawing from the UN Human Rights Council and halting funding of it.
“This is a body that engages all the time in slandering Israel,” Lieberman said in a Facebook post.
