JNS.org – Israeli police on Monday raided the east Jerusalem home of a Palestinian terrorist suspected of stabbing two border guards earlier in the day at the Lions’ Gate entrance to Jerusalem’s Old City.
Security entered the home of Muhammad Ibrahim Mattar, 25, in the Jabel Mukaber neighborhood of east Jerusalem and arrested four of his family members, including the attacker’s parents and a brother. Police also gathered evidence in the family home, including a flag with the insignia of the Hamas terror organization.
Mattar wounded border guards in the early morning hours with a large butcher’s knife, before being shot and later dying of his wounds. The moderately injured border guards were transported to the Hadassah Medical Center for treatment and were reported to be fully conscious and in stable condition upon arrival.
Monday’s stabbing attack came as Israeli police deployed extra units throughout Israel’s capital city for the Purim holiday, which is celebrated in Jerusalem a day after most towns as it is a “walled city.” A spokesperson for the Israel Police indicated that the holiday celebrations would continue as normal.
