JNS.org – A Knesset committee delayed voting on a controversial bill to annex the Jewish settlement of Ma’ale Adumim in Judea and Samaria (West Bank), amid a high-profile visit to Israel by a representative from the Trump administration.
The Ministerial Committee on Legislation was scheduled to consider the bill on Tuesday, but Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett pushed off the vote Monday, shortly after Jason Greenblatt, Trump’s international negotiations adviser, met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“We will do everything in coordination with the coalition, everything in its [proper] time,” Bennett said, Israel’s Channel 10 reported.
Bennett’s party has been pushing in recent months to extend full sovereignty over Ma’ale Adumim, a community home to some 40,000 Jews and widely assumed to be part of Israel in any future peace deal with the Palestinians.
Critics of the bill say any unilateral annexation of land by Israel could trigger an international incident.
