JNS.org – Syrian state media reported Thursday that large explosions during the early morning hours near Damascus International Airport were allegedly the result of an Israeli airstrike.
“A military position southwest of Damascus International Airport was targeted at dawn today by an Israeli aggression using several missiles fired from occupied territory, sparking explosions in the area,” Syria’s SANA news agency reported.
Reports indicate that as many as five missile strikes destroyed several fuel tanks and warehouses, causing only material destruction and no casualties.
“An explosion struck at dawn on Thursday fuel tanks and a warehouse near Damascus International Airport [which] was probably the result of an Israeli strike,” reported Al-Manar, a television station affiliated with the Lebanese terror organization Hezbollah.
Weapons intended to be transferred to Hezbollah, and supplied by Iran, were purportedly destroyed in the strike.
Israeli Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz hinted at Israel’s involvement in the strike without directly claiming responsibility, telling Army Radio, “We are acting to prevent the transfer of sophisticated weapons from Syria to Hezbollah in Lebanon by Iran.”
“When we receive serious information about the intention to transfer weapons to Hezbollah, we will act. This incident is totally consistent with this policy,” Katz added.
After the strike, videos and pictures of the explosions appeared on social media showing fire at the site.
