JNS.org – Some ten tombstones in a Jewish cemetery in the Romanian capital of Bucharest were vandalized earlier this week as Israel marked Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Aurel Vainer, president of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Romania, confirmed the vandalism in a Facebook post, saying the incident was “a serious act of vandalism and antisemitism.”
“The aggravating circumstance that the violent destruction of the ten funerary monuments occurred precisely on the day when Jewish people around the world commemorate the deaths of the six million Jews killed in the Holocaust cannot be explained by a mere coincidence,” he noted.
The Israeli Embassy in Romania also condemned the vandalism, expressing its “sorrow and revolt on the brutal antisemitic act aimed at destroying the funerary monuments in the Jewish cemetery in Bucharest.”
While Bucharest police identified three suspects in the vandalism, aged 13-16, no arrests have been made, the state news agency Agerpres reported.
