JNS.org – A newly constructed national Hall of Remembrance for fallen Israeli soldiers on Jerusalem’s Mount Herzl was unveiled on Thursday.
The walls of the hall — which will be inaugurated on Sunday night for Memorial Day — are built of 23,000 bricks reaching some 60 feet high, each stone individually engraved with the name of a fallen soldier, the date the soldier was killed and a candle to be lit on the anniversary of the soldier’s death.
The hall will also include a bell-shaped cone of light made of more than 6,000 steel bricks, designed and manufactured by the Israeli Defense Ministry’s Merkava Tank Administration.
Construction of the memorial began in January 2015 and has cost $25 million.
“The Hall of Remembrance will allow for a personal and collective experience of commemoration and is an expression of the country’s moral obligation to remember every single one of its fallen,” the Defense Ministry said. “It is the only structure in the country that physically commemorates all of Israel’s fallen, from all of its wars, on its very walls.”
