The “Jerusalem of Gold” dress worn by Israel’s culture minister on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday has drawn ire from numerous Arab media outlets and online commenters.
The bottom of Miri Regev’s attire — designed by Aviad Arik Herman — featured the skyline of Jerusalem, including the Western Wall and the Dome of the Rock.
Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya reported that Regev “wanted to send a political message in light of the growing international statements, including the American one, which does not recognize that the occupied Jerusalem is under Israel’s control.”
According to Al-Arabiya, social media users “expressed great rage in regard to Regev’s dress” which they considered to be “a provocation to the feelings of Muslims.”
The Hebrew news site nrg reported that a number of memes appeared online taking aim at the outfit, including one that called Regev the “minister of forgery and terrorism” and superimposed bloodstains and an Israeli flag on her.
In a statement, Regev — a member of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling Likud party — said, “This year we are celebrating 50 years since the liberation and reunification of Jerusalem. I am proud to celebrate this historic date through art and fashion, and I am happy that this work [by Herman] is so moving and honors the beautiful status of our eternal capital Jerusalem.”
