JNS.org – Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon was elected Wednesday as vice president of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly.
During his term, Danon will chair General Assembly meetings, participate in setting its agenda and oversee the rules and decorum during the sessions.
“It is an honor to represent the State of Israel in this leadership position at the United Nations,” Danon said. “We have proven once again that Israel is ready and able to serve in significant positions in the UN and the attempts to block this progress will not succeed.”
Danon was elected to the post as a representative of the Western European and Others (WEOG) regional group and begins his term in September with the opening of the new General Assembly session.
Last May, Danon became the first Israeli to chair a permanent UN committee when he was elected by 109 member-states to chair the 6th (Legal) Committee.
