JNS.org – Three Israeli teenagers were arrested on Saturday after being caught vandalizing headstones in the Be’er Sheva War Cemetery in southern Israel, the burial site of Australian military from World War I.
A witness reported to police that three youths were damaging headstones in what is known locally as the Australian WWI cemetery.
Police apprehended two teens, aged 14 and 17, and an 18-year-old, who were taken to a nearby police station for questioning. Officials released photos of several toppled headstones and noted the suspects were Jewish and that the cemetery served Christians, but have not yet released a motive for the vandalism.
The war memorial was founded for the Australian Light Horse Brigade and is a gravesite for more than 1,200 Commonwealth servicemen who fought under General Edmund Allenby during the Palestine Campaign toward the end of World War I.
