JNS.org – Hundreds of Israelis marked a pair of occasions, the 3rd International Yoga Day and the 25th anniversary of Israel-India diplomatic relations, on Wednesday in Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square.
This year’s Yoga Day festivities represented the largest-ever yoga event held in Israel and occurred as mass yoga sessions convened across the world in India, China, Colombia, the US, Mexico, Paraguay, Italy, Singapore and atop Peru’s Machu Picchu.
At the Tel Aviv event, some 1,500 brightly colored yoga mats created a massive artwork depicting a 100-year-old state of Israel in the year 2048. The artwork, conceived by Sharonna Karni Cohen, was designed by illustrator Amit Trainin and is based upon visions of a future Israel submitted by 500 people.
“Yoga is an invaluable gift of our ancient tradition,” said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who in July will become his country’s first head of state to visit Israel. “Yoga embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action, restraint and fulfillment, harmony between man and nature, a holistic approach to health and wellbeing. It is not about exercise, but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature.”
