JNS.org – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met on Wednesday with President Donald Trump’s international negotiations representative, Jason Greenblatt, during Greenblatt’s latest trip to the region to discuss renewed US-led peace efforts.
US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman and Israeli Ambassador to the US Ron Dermer both attended the meeting between Netanyahu and Greenblatt.
Greenblatt had informed a senior Palestinian official that Israel had agreed to “slow down” its construction in the West Bank and eastern Jerusalem throughout negotiations with the Palestinians, the London-based Arabic daily newspaper Al-Hayat reported on Wednesday. The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office denied the report, stating, “There is no such commitment.”
The Al-Hayat report quoted a senior Palestinian official as stating any agreement between the parties on final status issues such as Jerusalem, refugees, settlements, borders, water and security would be “immediately announced.”
Greenblatt arrived in Israel on July 9 for his sixth visit to the Jewish state in six months. He met this week with Friedman, US Consul General in Jerusalem Donald Blome and senior Palestinian officials.
The Trump administration is reportedly exploring the possibility of hosting an Israeli-Palestinian peace summit in September that would be attended by Arab leaders from the Gulf states.
