JNS.org – Amid a wide security crackdown, Israeli security forces on Wednesday night arrested 15 Palestinians suspected of playing key roles in violent Muslim riots over Israel’s now-removed metal detectors at Jerusalem’s Temple Mount.
Israeli security forces initiated the raids overnight in eastern Jerusalem. The suspects were detained for questioning and will have their detention extended after being brought before a court.
During the mid-July riots, hundreds of Palestinians threw stones, glass bottles and firebombs at security forces.
The violence peaked July 27 when Palestinians returned to worshiping on the Temple Mount, following a boycott over Israeli security measures enacted in the aftermath of the July 14 Arab terror attack that killed two Israeli Druze police officers near the holy site.
As part of the ongoing security crackdown, the IDF last weekend raided the offices of a Palestinian radio station in Ramallah, citing incitement to terrorism. The soldiers seized documents, equipment and media material in the raid.
Further, the IDF and Israel’s Shin Bet security agency arrested 29 Hamas members, including some of the terror group’s senior officials, in overnight raids toward the end of July.
