JNS.org – In a move that shows Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas is holding firm against the Gaza Strip-ruling terror group Hamas, some 30,000 Gaza-based public sector workers whose salaries are paid by the PA will be fired or forced into early retirement, a senior Palestinian official told Israel Hayom.
According to the official, Abbas plans to keep the pressure on Hamas in Gaza for as long as the terrorist organization refuses to implement a reconciliation agreement with the PA president’s Fatah faction, dismantle its Gaza administrative committee and transfer power of governance to representatives of a Palestinian unity government. The establishment of the Gaza administrative committee effectively displaced Fatah as the governing body in the coastal territory.
“If Hamas insists on not dismantling the administrative committee it set up for the Gaza Strip, which in effect takes all authority to govern Gaza out of the hands of the legitimate Palestinian government, then Hamas will be the one to pay the salaries of government and public employees [in Gaza],” the official said.
“A situation cannot exist where the Palestinian Authority has no governing authority over the Gaza Strip but is still the one paying salaries of government and public workers there,” he added.
Hamas has warned that if Abbas keeps the economic sanctions in place, chaos will ensue and the Gaza-ruling organization will declare a state of emergency.
