Conan O’Brien Tries ‘Amazing’ Shakshuka, Jokes About Middle East Heat and Attends a Bar Mitzvah While Filming Travel Show in Israel

Late night talk show host Conan O’Brien has been sharing with his social media followers all of his escapades during his ongoing week-long visit to Israel, where he is filming a travel show that will air in September.
In a Facebook live stream on Saturday from an overlook in Jaffa, O’Brien talked about the great food and drinks he had consumed thus far in Israel, including “amazing” shakshuka (a dish of eggs with tomatoes and spices), Goldstar beer and some “incredible” Thai offerings at a restaurant where he ate “some of the best food I’ve ever had.” He also joked he had been dealing with the extreme summer heat in Israel by wearing a “very big” table cloth over his head everywhere he went.
O’Brien added, “I have a hat but I try not to wear that too much because I look like an older woman walking down the street. [And] I wear a sun-protective shirt, which is the most uncool thing you’ve ever seen. I’m like a vampire. When the sun comes up here I start shrieking and hissing, it’s pretty horrific. But I get by, I sweated my body weight today and I’m feeling good.”
O’Brien flew to Israel last week to film one of his “Conan Without Borders” travel shows. So far he has visited the office of the Israeli navigation application Waze, celebrated what he claimed to be his own bar mitzvah and stopped by the beach in Tel Aviv. He described the people in the Israeli coastal metropolis by saying, “All the men are incredibly buff, the women are beautiful…[and there are] a lot of men in Speedos. I will not be in a Speedo, I promise you that. No one wants to see me in a Speedo.”
O’Brien said in his Facebook live stream that he also planned on traveling to Jerusalem and Bethlehem. He quipped about the latter, “I hope I can get a room because Jesus had some trouble.” The comedian also shared on social media a video he filmed inside the bathroom of his El Al flight to Israel, where he was brushing up on his Hebrew.
“You can see it says ‘towel disposal,'” he said, pointing to Hebrew letters under the English translation. “I recognize the words from the Old Testament when Moses tells his people to listen to the commandments and, also, to dispose of their towels … he almost made it into a commandment.”
