A Jewish couple was forced to postpone their wedding in Houston this week after Hurricane Harvey flooded the city and ruined their plans for their big day, Chabad.org reported.

Dayna Skolkin and Josh Tillis made the decision to push off their wedding after family members encountered difficulties with their flights to Texas and their wedding vendors faced problems transporting items due to the affects of the hurricane, which dumped nearly 50 inches of rain on Houston and resulted in severe flooding in the area. All the food they purchased for a pre-wedding Shabbat dinner, planned for this Friday night at a Chabad-Lubavitch center called Aishel House, will be donated to the Jewish center.

“It was really hashgacha pratis [divine providence] because we had all this food, a lot more supplies than we usually have on hand, so we were able to make dinner” for many more people, said Rabbi Eliezer Lazaroff, who is co-director of Aishel House with his wife, Rochel.

The bride- and groom-to-be also joined other volunteers in helping prepare food for the Chabad center. The rabbi’s wife told Chabad.org: “I said, ‘Oh my God, Dayna, this is the food we were going to use for your wedding.’ She almost had tears in her eyes, and said she wanted to help. So she and Josh joined the assembly line and started breading chicken for more than two hours.”

Though her wedding was postponed, Skolkin said she was “grateful” to be able to help out people in need. She said, “the food helped people who really needed it. That was amazing…It felt very good to do something proactive yesterday. It was really cathartic to us to take a step back [from wedding preparations] and see the community come together.”

Skolki and Tillis have rescheduled their wedding for mid-December.
