The news of Sunday night’s deadly mass shooting in Las Vegas hit close to home for a major New York City synagogue, as one of the more than 500 people wounded was a daughter of an ex-employee.
In a message sent to community members on Monday, Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun Rabbis Chaim Steimetz, Elie Weinstock and Haskel Lookstein wrote, “Samantha Arjune, the daughter of our beloved former Superintendent, Rudy Arjune, was shot in the leg. She is now in surgery. Samantha was for many years a fixture at KJ/Ramaz events. She is an adoring daughter, and is a true model of honoring one’s parents. When offering a misheberach prayer for her, her name is Samantha bat (daughter of) Savitri.”
“Our entire community is praying for Samantha, for all the injured, and the people of Las Vegas. May God bless America with peace and security,” they concluded.
At least 58 people were killed on Sunday when gunman Stephen Paddock — a 64-year-old Mesquite, Nevada resident — opened fire on an outdoor country music concert from the 32nd-floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino across the street.
As of Monday afternoon, investigators had yet to identify Paddock’s motive.
