JNS.org – Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin made statements in support of a united Spain during a visit to the country on Monday, amid efforts by the country’s restive Catalonia region to declare its independence.
“Spain for us is one country, and His Majesty the King is the symbol of that unity,” said Rivlin during a state dinner hosted by Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia in Madrid’s Royal Palace.
“All of the citizens of Spain are dear to us and we hope and pray that all conflicts will be solved by peaceful measures,” Rivlin said.
The Israeli president did not make any reference to Catalonia.
Rivlin was in Spain on a four-day trip marking 30 years of Israel-Spain diplomatic relations as well as the centennial anniversary of the Spanish Jewish community’s resettlement after being expelled in 1492.
Late last month, the Israeli news website nrg had reported that Israel would remain neutral on Catalonia’s bid for independence from Spain, rebuffing a request from the Spanish government for the Jewish state to align itself with other Western countries that were opposing the bid.
