Top Jewish boxer Cletus “Hebrew Hammer” Seldin continued his daunting run of victories with a third-round stoppage win over Roberto Ortiz at the Nassau Coliseum on Saturday night.
The win brings the Long Island-born 31 year-old’s total to 21 wins out of 21 – including an impressive 17 knockouts.
Seldin – who fights with a Star of David on his shorts and wears a jacket declaring “Remember the Masada” – “was taking a big step up in competition, but he came out determined to not just compete, and not just win, but to do so impressively,” SB Nation’s boxing news site said in a report on the bout with Ortiz.
“He dropped Ortiz (35-2-2, 26 KO) within the first 15 seconds of the fight, and put him down again later in the opening round,” the site said. “In the second, things just kept going wrong for Ortiz, as Seldin cracked him with another right hand that caused a cut over the left eye. That cut was what wound up stopping the fight in the third, as the doctor advised the referee to call a halt to things.”
The official time of the stoppage was 2:43 of round three.
“I give myself an A!” Seldin told HBO’s Max Kellerman. “I could’ve took him out a little bit earlier, but I showed my determination, I kept coming, trying to land that big shot. I could do it with either hand, I was really trying to set him up.”
“You could see how rough and tough and old school style I fight,” Seldin said, referring to his trademark boxing style. “You gotta be in great shape to take me down.”
