The words that every supporter of Israel must say today are “Thank you, President Trump.” Thank you, Mr. President, for your announcement recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel — and for doing the right thing in announcing that the US embassy will be relocated to Jerusalem.
Thank you for saying that, “After more than two decades of waivers, we are no closer to a lasting peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians. It would be folly to assume that repeating the exact same formula would now produce a different or better result.”
And thank you for telling the world, “This is a long overdue step to advance the peace process and to work towards a lasting agreement. Israel is a sovereign nation, with the right — like every other sovereign nation, to determine its own capital. Acknowledging this as a fact is a necessary condition for achieving peace.”
Trump is right — this decision was long overdue. At the same time, one must also question how Jews who care about Israel can back the Democratic Party, which contains a growing number of politicians and voters who oppose Israel. From Oslo to the Iran deal, the Democrats have been wrong on Israel.
Many leading Democrats condemned Trump’s decision, including Senator Dianne Feinstein, who claimed that, “The future of Jerusalem is an issue that should be decided by Israel and the Palestinians, not unilaterally by the United States.”
When it comes to Israel, standing with the Republican Party in the best interests of the Jewish community. And today all those who care about Israel should say, “Thank you, President Trump.”
