JNS.org – The head of Romania’s governing Social Democratic Party, Liviu Nicolae Dragnea, has called for the European country to transfer its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Dragnea’s call follows Romania’s abstention from last week’s United Nations General Assembly vote on a resolution condemning the Dec. 6 US decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. President Donald Trump also initiated plans to move the American embassy to Jerusalem.
In a statement, Dragnea said his country is “seriously considering transferring the Romanian Embassy to Jerusalem,” noting that all of Israel’s major institutions are located in that city.
Romanian media attributed the move to fear of reprisal from the US administration, which has threatened to cut foreign aid to nations that voted in favor of the General Assembly resolution.
Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu, president of the Romanian Senate, said the embassy decision “needs to be examined from a number of aspects and not just the technical aspect. I think it is fitting that the Romanian Foreign Ministry makes the decision, and it is there that the subject should be brought for decision.”
