Japan is seeking to play a more active role in Middle East peacemaking and has offered to host a meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and top Trump administration official Jared Kushner, the Hebrew news site Walla reported on Tuesday.
According to unnamed diplomatic officials cited by Walla, such a summit — the brainchild of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe — would only occur if Kushner agrees to participate, and he has not yet made a decision on the matter.
Kushner is the point man for President Donald Trump’s ongoing effort to revive the long-dormant Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
On Monday, Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono visited Jerusalem and Ramallah. At a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Kono said the bilateral relationship between their two countries was “going very well, and we would like to continue this momentum.”
Netanyahu said, “We both live in challenging regions, but we’re committed to the pursuit of prosperity, security and peace, and I think it’s easier for any one of us to achieve it with the help of the other.”
