Brother of Florida Shooting Victim Says He Wore Kippah During Meeting With Trump Because Jewish Pride Is Important

The brother of a Jewish student killed in the Florida high school shooting on Feb. 14 said there was a strong message behind his decision to wear a skullcap, also known as kippah, during his recent meeting with US President Donald Trump.
Exactly a week after Meadow Pollack, 18, was killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., her parents and two brothers, Huck and Hunter, flew to Washington, DC, for a roundtable discussion with President Donald Trump at the White House.
Ahead of the televised meeting, they also had a private sit-down with the president in the Oval Office. Hunter was the only one donning kippah and later told Chabad.org, “I wore it there because I’m proud to be Jewish.”
He added, “I wanted to wear my kippah in the highest office of the land. My Jewish peers in this country need to be proud of being Jewish, and that’s how we can honor Meadow’s memory as a beautiful Jewish girl.”
Rabbi Avraham Friedman of Chabad of Coral Springs, a longtime friend of the Pollack family, has been helping the family throughout the mourning process by providing support, praying with them, and teaching the family the traditional mourners’ prayers.
Hunter said, “I thought of Rabbi Friedman as I walked into the Oval Office with my kippah. The tefillin ( phylacteries), the learning, the Jewish stuff has been very comforting to me and my family.”
